In the final days of March 2011, while working with Terra imagery and remote-sensing maps of the Middle East published by NASA's Earth Observatory, I noticed the use of an alternative name alongside the Persian Gulf on one of the organization's maps. In the past, while reviewing satellite imagery published by the same organization, I had not encountered a similar case, and the name Persian Gulf had consistently been used for this international waterway.
Concerned that similar cases might occur again, I decided to look into the matter. During the correspondence that followed, my objection was initially challenged. After further exchanges and explanations, Earth Observatory reconsidered its approach and informed me that, in the short term, its staff had been asked to use “Persian Gulf, not Arabian,” while the reference source used for naming was also being reconsidered.
