On December 17, 2006, after staring for four hours and ten minutes at a region of sky in the constellation Boötes, the Hubble Space Telescope captured this image of two colliding galaxies. From our viewpoint one galaxy is seen edge-on and the other face-on, so together they resemble an exclamation mark—an exclamation mark about 450 million light-years away.
Perhaps cellular life is developing on a planet orbiting a star in one of these two galaxies. If so, over the next several billion years that primitive life might evolve into intelligent beings, build their own Hubble Space Telescope (!), point it toward the Milky Way, and see a somewhat similar image of the collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda.
Postscript: The Andromeda Galaxy is approaching our galaxy at roughly 100–140 kilometres per second. Given its approximate distance of 2.5 million light-years, the source states that a collision with our galaxy is expected in about 4.5 billion years.
